With a lot of new face in the team, this was the 1st time the girls were able to play together to get them ready for the new season. The addition of the 5 new players, a new style of football and now playing 11v11, as well as taking into account they would be playing against an older team who will play at under 16’s the coming season, the girls would be facing a very tough test, yet from the very start they did not let any of that show.
Within the 1st few minutes of the game Mia, Jasmin and Rhianna had tested the keeper and forced some very good saves from her. Mia seemed to have the bit between her teeth though and added her 1st goal for the team with some lovely foot work on the edge of the area to then fire into the top corner. She quickly added a 2nd a couple of minutes later after a lovely pass from Drew opened up the defence and she slid it past the out coming keeper. Daisy was proving to be a live wire down the right as the Syston girls couldn’t handle her pace, she skipped inside and fired across the box for the on rushing Sophia but the Syston player beat her to the cross but could not help putting the ball in the back of her own net for the teams 3rd.
Syston tried to get a foothold in the game and pressed on to the back line of Meg, Evie, Erin and Katie but they held strong, won the ball back and passed it around the backline looking for the space to send it through. Drew picked up the ball and fed Jasmin on the edge of the area who forced a fantastic save from the out rushing keeper.
The girls pressed on from the keeper’s long kick and won the ball back, trying to add another to the scoresheet, Jasmin forced a fantastic save from the keeper who tipped it around the post. Daisy sent a lovely corner in from the right and Drew powered a header into the top of the net leaving the keeper and the defence standing watching.
The Syston girls kicked off and added their 1st of the game, catching our defence napping, with a tidy little pass out wide the ball was crossed early for their number 1 playing upfront to slip past Faith just before the ref blew the whistle for half time.
The girls weren’t impressed with themselves at conceding in the way they did and from the restart went at the Syston defence with pure menace, Jasmin picked the ball up in midfield and played in Sophia who unselfishly held the ball up and played Jasmin through for her to bury her 1st goal for the team.
That seemed to spur Jasmin on further and within a minute of the restart she had found the back of the net with the help of Sophia again, she rounded the keeper then slid the ball into the back of the net.
Rhianna went close with a lovely cut inside where she rounded the outrushing keeper but she could only find the side netting.
The girls had again found their rhythm and started to press the Syston girls giving them no time on the ball and forcing the errors, they won the ball back on the edge of the Syston penalty area and passed the ball around with no less than 15 passes until they found the opening they were looking for and Drew obliged, she hit a 25 yard shot straight into the bottom corner leaving everyone flat footed.
Rhianna’s hard work had finally paid off as she added her 1st of the season with a bit of a wonder goal, Mia had fed her out on the left hand side, Rhianna cut in and fired from 30 yards out looping over the keeper and finding the top corner.
Syston lobbed a ball over the top from the kick off for their number 7 to run onto and in the box there was what I called a coming together as the 2 players turned and ran into each other but the ref pointed to the spot. Their girl stepped up to take the penalty but Faith was upto the task, went down to her left and tipped it onto the post, then quickly recovered to dive on the loose ball. She took the kick out of her hands quickly as she’s seen most of the Syston team on the edge of our area and caught them off guard, Mia picked up the ball and ran onto the 2 defenders, side stepping one and turning the other before pulling the trigger and firing the ball into the top corner to add her 2nd of the match.
The match finished 9-1 to LCLFC ’66. A very impressive performance for their 1st game together as a team.
Final Score 1-9
